# The Insider Programme: what each channel actually costs

> Dev, Beta and Canary differ in stability and in how hard it is to leave. What to expect before you opt a work machine in.

## The short answer

Insider builds are the cheapest way to see what is coming and the most reliable way to lose an afternoon. The channels differ by **build cadence** and by **how hard it is to get back**:

| Channel | Cadence | Stability | Leaving |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Canary** | fastest, newest platform code | lowest | reinstall |
| **Dev** | fast, feature-incomplete | low | reinstall |
| **Beta** | slower, features mostly complete | medium | possible when a release matches |
| **Release Preview** | near-final, plus optional previews | highest | usually by turning it off |

The important line is the last column. Getting **out** of Canary or Dev without a reinstall is generally not possible: your build number is ahead of the public release, and Windows does not downgrade.

## What "costs" means in practice

- **Work machine**: an Insider build can break a VPN client, a printer driver or an anti-cheat. You find out at the worst time.
- **Data**: bugs during a preview cycle can corrupt a profile. Backups are not optional.
- **Support**: vendors do not support Insider builds. Neither does your IT department.
- **Time**: you will be rebooting into new builds weekly.

## Before you opt in

```powershell
# current build and channel state
Get-ComputerInfo | Select-Object WindowsProductName,OsBuildNumber,WindowsVersion
Get-ItemProperty 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
  Select-Object BranchName,Ring,IsBuildFlightingEnabled
```

Take a full image, not just a file backup. If you have no image, do not opt a machine you depend on into Dev or Canary.

## Where Insider builds are genuinely useful

- **Testing your own software** against next-release behaviour.
- **Checking a driver or firmware fix** before it ships.
- **Seeing a feature** you are writing documentation about — which is why this site has a VM for it.

The correct shape for that is a **VM**, not your daily machine: snapshot before each flight, roll back when it breaks, and never put personal data in it.

> **Caution: Release Preview is not the same as stable**
>
> Release Preview delivers near-final builds *and* optional previews of cumulative updates. It is the safest Insider channel, not a stable channel. If the machine must not surprise you, stay on the general release.

## If you already opted in by accident

1. **Settings → Windows Update → Windows Insider Programme** — turn off "receive preview builds".
2. If the current build is **newer** than the public release, turning it off does not downgrade you: you stay until the public release catches up, or you reinstall.
3. Check whether the device is managed: a policy (`AllowBuildPreview`) can force the channel back on.

```powershell
Get-ItemProperty 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
  Select-Object AllowBuildPreview,BranchReadinessLevel,DeferFeatureUpdates
```

## The alternative most people want

If the goal is "get features later, not sooner", the right lever is the **deferral/pinning** settings, not Insider:

- pause updates for a few weeks,
- pin a target release,
- use a Windows 11 LTSC release for machines that must not change.

That is a policy setting on the stable channel, not a preview channel.

## Lab boundary

E1. Channel behaviour is documented by Microsoft; build numbers change weekly, so this page intentionally quotes no specific build. The lab's 26H2 VM runs a public build, not an Insider one.
