The short answer
Section titled “The short answer”For a normal driver update, use NVIDIA App or the official installer and choose the custom/clean install option when you need it. Use DDU only when a normal uninstall fails, you swapped GPU vendors, or you have a reproducible driver corruption.
DDU is not a monthly maintenance ritual. Running it every update adds risk without improving performance.
Normal update vs clean install
Section titled “Normal update vs clean install”| Situation | Path |
|---|---|
| Monthly driver update | NVIDIA App / official installer, express install |
| GPU upgrade within NVIDIA | Custom install, “Perform a clean installation” |
| Switching NVIDIA ↔ AMD/Intel | DDU in Safe Mode, then install the new vendor driver |
| Persistent display/black-screen issue | DDU + clean install, after a restore point |
| Laptop with OEM-modified driver | Check the OEM page first; generic driver may break hotkeys |
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- Create a restore point.
- Download the correct driver for the desktop or laptop GPU and Windows build.
- Note the current driver version:
nvidia-smi. - Close games, capture tools and overclocking utilities.
- Have the installer offline if the network is unreliable.
Option A — NVIDIA App
Section titled “Option A — NVIDIA App”- Install/update NVIDIA App from NVIDIA’s site.
- Open Drivers and check the recommended branch.
- Choose Custom installation if you want a clean install or to exclude components.
- Let it uninstall/install and reboot if asked.
- Verify with
nvidia-smiand Device Manager.
Option B — official installer
Section titled “Option B — official installer”Download the driver package, run it as administrator, choose Custom, and select Perform a clean installation when needed. This removes the old driver settings and profiles; you will lose per-game NVIDIA profiles, so export/note them first.
Option C — DDU last resort
Section titled “Option C — DDU last resort”Use Display Driver Uninstaller only when:
- the installer fails repeatedly;
- the display is broken after a normal rollback;
- you are changing GPU vendors;
- a clean install still leaves the same corruption.
Procedure: download DDU and the new driver first, boot Safe Mode, run DDU for the GPU vendor, reboot, install the new driver, reboot, verify. Do not run DDU with the only copy of the installer still on the network.
Troubleshooting matrix
Section titled “Troubleshooting matrix”| Symptom | Likely cause | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Installer says “already installed” | Partial install/registration | Custom install or DDU after a restore point |
| Black screen after install | Display mode/driver mismatch | Boot safe mode, roll back, reinstall |
nvidia-smi missing |
Driver not loaded or wrong package | Check Device Manager, reinstall the full package |
| Laptop hotkeys broken | Generic driver replaced OEM stack | Reinstall the OEM package |
| Game stutters only after update | Shader cache/driver branch | Clear shader cache, test the previous branch |
| Code 43 | Driver/VM/hardware issue | Check event log; do not “fix” with a random registry patch |
Verify
Section titled “Verify”Verify
Section titled “Verify”nvidia-smiGet-PnpDevice -Class Display | Select-Object FriendlyName, StatusCheck:
- the driver version matches what you installed;
- Device Manager has no warning;
- the display runs at the expected resolution/refresh;
- one game or GPU workload launches without a black screen;
- laptop hybrid graphics still switches correctly.
What not to do
Section titled “What not to do”- Do not use a “driver pack” or “booster” utility.
- Do not disable Windows Update to stop driver updates; use the vendor policy/WU settings instead.
- Do not DDU every month.
- Do not install a Game Ready driver over a broken installation and call it clean.
- Do not overclock while validating a new driver.
